This lesion appeared at the umbilicus.
What is it called?
What might be the underlying pathology?
This appeared spontaneously at the umbilicus in an emaciated, elderly patient and is called Sister Joseph's nodule. It often indicates an underlying malignancy and is due to secondary spread, either down from the liver along the falciform ligament or up from the pelvic organs along the various ligamentous attachments to the umbilicus. Usually the malignancy is at an advanced stage. Biopsy will establish the diagnosis.
