What is this condition?
How is it treated?
This shows divarification of recti where the rectus abdominus muscles have parted, stretching the linea alba. The swelling only appears when the patient increases intra-abdominal pressure by sitting up. He has had no previous surgical operation. The condition is usually painless and there is no real risk of bowel obstruction. Patients are often overweight and physically unfit. In most cases, surgery is not recommended as the results are poor. If the patient requests repair, then either a simple sutured repair might be attempted or a mesh repair.
