This is a mid line neck swelling
which lies above the thyroid but below the thyroid cartilage. This is the
typical position of thyroglossal cyst which arises from a remnant of the thyroglossal
duct, an embryological remnant of a duct which runs from the back of the tongue
to the thyroid gland. This could also be an infected sebaceous cyst. The most
likely organism is staphylococcus aureus.
