This is an incisional hernia. The risk factors are many and include wound infection, malignancy, malnutrition, poor surgical technique, steroids and cytotoxic therapy, diabetes, chronic cough, ascites, post op ileus/obstruction. The current treatment of choice is by mesh repair in patients who are symptomatic and for whom surgery is not contra-indicated. Laparoscopic approaches are under evaluation.
