What examination technique is being demonstrated?
Is the result affected by age?
What deficit is required for a positive result?
The examiner is pinching the skin to detect dehydration by demonstrating lack of the normal skin turgor and elasticity. Part of the aging process is loss of elasticity and this test may be unhelpful in the elderly. It is a late sign and in adults might only appear with more than 5 litres of fluid deficit.
