Description
|
A reaction caused by the effect of radiotherapy on the skin. This can take the form of:
- erythema (see photo above left)
- dry desquamation
- moist desquamation (see photo above right)

Management Aims
|
The aim is complete healing of the skin
|
|
Treatment
|
Daily assessment of the skin for:
- redness
- broken areas
- presence of secondary infection
- pain
- heat
Treatment of secondary infection
Adequate pain relief
Loose clothing/cotton/seamless underwear
No scented products
Use plain water on affected areas and pat skin dry
Avoid rubbing skin
Avoid creams unless prescribed (23)
In dry desquamation, asses need for aqueous cream and get this prescribed.
In moist desquamation, refer to appropriate consultant
Cover with appropriate non adherent dressing using no tape on affected area.
Renew dressing daily.
Assess need for a break from treatment.
Pressure relief as appropriate depending on treatment site.
