
EDITORIAL BOARD
Mr Steve Nixon MB,ChB,BSc FRCS(Edin) I am a Consultant General Surgeon based in the Royal Infirmary and the Western
General Hospital, Edinburgh and also a part-time Senior Lecturer in the University
of Edinburgh. I have a major clinical interest in laparoscopic surgery, performing
cholecystectomy, inguinal hernia repair, splenectomy and appendicectomy, as
well as routine diagnostic laparoscopy. I also provide a vascular access service
working closely with the Department of Oncology and inserting a wide range
of vascular access devices. I have had a long-standing interest in surgical
audit and information technology, having been closely associated with the
Lothian Surgical Audit for over 20 years and chairman of the Management Committee
of the Scottish Audit of Surgical Mortality for 10 years. I regularly teach and examine undergraduate and postgraduate students on behalf of my hospital, the University of Edinburgh and the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. I have given invited lectures throughout the United Kingdom, Ireland, France, Malaysia, India, Hong Kong and Australia. I have also undertaken practical courses in laparoscopic surgery in Malaysia, India and Ireland. Mr Chris Oliver BSc, MB BS, FRCS (Eng), FRCS (Tr & Orth),
FRCS (Ed), FRCP(Ed), DM is a member of Council of the RCSEd (2002-7).He is Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh and part-time Senior Lecturer,Orthopaedic Surgery, University of Edinburgh, Scotland. His Doctorate of Medicine Thesis was in Artificial Intelligence and contributed to his early use and understanding of the Internet. His Information Technology and Internet activity has been focused on helping doctors communicate on a global basis. He helped develop the RCSEd website and helped guide the development of the RCSEd Faculty and Diploma of Medical Informatics where he is an advisor, module and personal tutor. David Large
is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon in Ayr Hospital. He did his basic surgical training in Edinburgh followed by higher surgical training in Edinburgh followed by higher surgical training in Aberdeen and Melbourne. He has lectured on MRCS courses and written one of the modules of the select course. He has been a basic surgical skills instructor for the last 7 years. In addition he has facilitated on a variety of educational courses for a Consultant. He is a member of the Advisory Committee in Surgical Audit in the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and on the Speciality Advisory Board in Orthopaedic Surgery.

Peter
Driscoll BSc(Hons) Physiology, MB BS, MRCS(Ed)
I am currently a Surgery Research Fellow with Simon Paterson-Brown at the Royal
Infirmary of Edinburgh investigating alternative methods of assessment for basic
surgical trainees, with particular emphasis on 360 degree multidisciplinary
assessment for formative assessment, simulation in the care of critically ill patients and video-assessment of operative skill of basic
surgical trainees. My undergraduate years started with physiology (and golf!!) at St Andrews University followed by a total of 7 years in the
Royal Free Hospital,Hampstead, London including a period as an Anatomy Demonstrator.
I then moved north to join the Basic Surgical Training Scheme in the South
East of Scotland prior to starting my research post. |
Dermot McKeown is a Consultant in Anaesthesia and Intensive Care at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh. His clinical interests are in Trauma, the early management of the Critically Ill, and Liver Transplant Anaesthesia. He teaches on ATLS, CCrISP, and ETCC courses, and is on the Steering Group for UK ATLS. He also is involved in undergratuate teaching, particularly second years.

Dr Ian Penman is a Consultant Gastroenterologist at the Western General Hospital, Edinburgh. He has a particular interest in upper gastrointestinal endoscopy and is developing an endoscopic ultrasound service. |
